Even though I was captivated with the artwork, I am almost embarressed to say that I had no idea who the artist was for years. It wasn’t until later I learned a bit about Riggs as an artist. He was self-taught and even though he did attend art school Rigg’s has been quoted in saying that they, “didn’t know much about illustration anyway”, and that they are, “geared towards churning out people to fit into artistic pigeonholes”.
I have to agree with Rigg’s statements, as in my personal work, I typically want to create stuff that I like, not what others want. But there lies the issue with being freelance. You have to deliver what the client wants, unfortunately sometimes for me, I will turn down work, because I am not intrested.
Any way Riggs is probably the “root of evil” in my work, and for that I am thankful.
