I love reading Maria Brophy’s blog. I always find use full information, and I am anxiously awaiting her new book on the Business of Art. Anyways in her latest blog post she posted this Youtube video that made me laugh, because I can honestly say this is at times how a conversation goes when someone approaches me about doing some custom work for them. It made me laugh…in a “I really hate when people do this” kinda way…

Too true! I work as an automotive technician and people ask for proprietary information so they can fix their own car. I am not allowed to do that, and why would I give away information so I can't make money.
I don’t mind sharing information, and I don’t mind edits and such if they have been discussed. But I am not a fan of the “trade” or the “good exposure for you” that I so often here.
Hey, thanks for the kudos! Glad you like my posts. This youtube video is awesome – it’s all the lines that artists hear over and over again – “it’ll be great promotion for you to give me art for free” and “that’s not in our budget” and yadda yadda yadda.
I hope more artists will put their foot down and demand that they be paid for their time.
