For anyone who has followed my work, knows that skulls are probably my favorite subject matter to paint, draw or sculpt. I am sure that the facination originated with the numerous books on dinosaurs that I had as a child, as well as books on the evolution of man that was filled with skulls expaining the differences between Homo Habilus and Homo Erectus. As well as famous dead heads of Lucy and Twiggy.
While I never really read these books until later years, I was always facinated with the pictures of skulls and bones.
When I started airbrushing I was amazed by the realism that one could achieve. Especially the colours to achieve the look of real bone. I start to seek out airbrush artists that also leaned towards painting the undead. Enter Rod Fuchs.
I had unbeknownst to me actually had been well aquainted with some of Rod’s work, through going to custom car and motorcycle shows. There are always sticker booths with pinup girls, and naturally some skulls. I was always drawn to the stickers, and I had no idea who the artist was, but I just loved the style.
Through trying to pick up techniques for airbrushing at some forum sites. I came across the works of Rod Fuchs, the man who created these stickers that had always caught my attention at car shows.
Using my airbrush, I had started working on emulating the skull style that is distincively Fuchs. While I can honestly say that in my attempt it has a “Fuchs Flavor”, the skull still is influenced by my own flair, and a drop of McCully Mayhem”

I think Rod’s influence will be marked by many for a great number of years to come.
His style is not only unique but there is so much more too it that gives every piece he paints just so much more depth and emotion.
Nice job on the skull pain.
